I am sharing a peek into our Yaletown Studio and some essential things I have learned to be able to run a business with a baby. If you have been following along on my journey, you know that I am a full-time working mom with an 11 month old baby girl. I feel very blessed to be able to do what I love, build a brand, create a community and get to have my baby along with me for the crazy ride! I get asked regularly how I manage it all. “How do you run a successful business and raise a child?”
Honestly, I don’t have the answer. It is a daily struggle for me to find enough time for everything. Often I’m left feeling like I didn’t do enough, work enough, play with Esti enough, see my husband enough…. At the end of the day, what I did WAS enough and that is something that I have to remind myself on a daily basis. I can be my worst critic and tend to be way harder on myself than anyone else. I am doing the best that I can and that is all I can ask for. There are also a few things that help to make life a little easier and allow me to do the things I love, being a mother and being an entrepreneur.
First and foremost, the number one thing that allows me to run a small business and raise a child is the fantastic support system that I have around me. My husband is nothing but supportive in every aspect of the word. Talk about Super Dad!! He does the dishes, the laundry, he cooks meals, he pays the bills, he takes care of Esti in every way that is asked of him. Without him, there is no way that I would be able to do this.
I am also very lucky to have the most amazing support from our family. My Mother-in-law comes to be with Esti every Wednesday and allows me uninterrupted work time at the studio to just get stuff done! We have also recently added two more days of care for Esti, allowing me 3 full days in the studio. I am able to spend my mornings with her, feed her breakfast and play and then head off to work. It is really satisfying for me to be able to focus on one thing at one time. To really be present in what I am doing at that moment.
I can do anything, but I can’t do everything. Having a strong team is key in the success of any business. Hollie is our Studio Coordinator. She helps me with every aspect of the business and you may have recognized her name written on your customer cards or met her at one of our Pop Up Shops. She also manages our wholesale division and contributed her extensive design background to our new SS16 collection. I can’t even tell you how excited I am about it!!! Just wait until you see what we have in store for the new year.
The days that I work from home or the studio are much harder, as my time between work and being a mom are intertwined. It is really hard to not get off focus and just spend the day playing and caring for Esti. I have also noticed that as she continues to grow and become more mobile, it is harder to have her in the studio. As much as I love having her with me, she pulls all of the stock off the shelves, gets into the garbage cans and really causes more work for me. We found a fabulous solution with the BABYBJÖRN Play Yard Light Travel Crib that we got from West Coast Kids. We initially looked at the Play Yard for travel purposes, but then soon realized that it was a must-have for the studio when I needed to work with Esti. She happily plays in it and it allows me the freedom to be with her and work.
What I love the most about it, is how easy it is to put together and take apart. The large handle carry-case is easy for me to hold while I transport the crib from the car to my studio and have Esti in my other arm. It is the lightest travel crib we could find and we have been so happy with it thus far. I am really excited to be bringing it with us on our upcoming trip to Mexico at the end of the week. I will keep you posted on how it handles on the flight.
I also used the BABYBJÖRN ONE carrier during the first 6 months I worked with Esti. Some days it was the only way I could get work done with her, as she went through a really clingy stage. I really liked the fact that I could wear her both front and back facing and that it also transitions to wear the child on your back. It’s appropriate from newborn to 3 years, so it really is the only ONE carrier you will ever need!
Overall, having a strong support system, a solid team you can trust and amazing products like the Play Yard Travel Crib, really allow me to “do it all!” Are you a working mom? I would love to hear some of your essentials on how you manage work and family. Leave me a comment below!
