A Love Lost But Never Forgotten | #coenstrong

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. A day dedicated to all things “love” and celebrating it with those you admire the most. It always makes me so sentimental.  Even more so now that my heart seems to have grown ten fold since the birth of my daughter, Esti. Which is why this story hit me so hard and I had to share it with you.

Last week I connected with the lovely trio from Good Husbands Apparel. This team of amazing local moms, who also happen to be family, have created a company that carries the coolest tees for your little ones, as well as styles for hip parents alike. Check out the hello tee, which is my favorite in their collection. We got to chatting and they shared a preview of their latest release and the story behind the #coenstrong tee. The story brought tears to my eyes and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

Let me introduce you to Coen. This sweet little boy was born with a unique heart condition called AVSD. He spent the first month of his life at BC Women’s NICU intermediate nursery while doctors determined the level of care Coen needed to manage congenital heart failure at home.

Screen Shot 2015-02-12 at 10.34.40 PMThe hope was that Coen would have one successful surgery around 3-6M of age, but unfortunately there were complications and the surgery did not go as anticipated. He fought for his life for 19 days at BC Children’s Hospital before he was laid to rest on December 5, 2014, at just four months old. His mother proudly says, he was the strongest and bravest boy she has ever known.

Being a new parent myself, my heart broke at the thought of the sheer grief Coen’s parents, Cambrea and Christoph, have endured. I can’t even begin to imagine what the past few months have been like for them and their family. What I do know is that they received the most amazing care at BC Children’s Hospital and they have started a Tribute in their son’s name to help others suffering from cardiac failure.

IMG_1892Good Husbands Apparel designed the “Coen” tee for kids, women and men with net proceeds going directly to BC Children’s Hospital Cardiac Unit in memory of  sweet little Coen. You can donate directly to the cause here, or purchase a #coenstrong tee here.  They truly appreciate all of your support, as your generosity will help save the life of a child.  I have ordered one for Esti and I can’t wait for her to wear it while keeping Coen’s memory alive.

Sending big love and hugs to the Strubin family during this difficult time.
